a question.

Is this blog template too crowded? should I make it simpler?

The only guide to a man is his conscience; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor.

It fell to Neville Chamberlain in one of the supreme crises of the world to be contradicted by events, to be disappointed in his hopes, and to be deceived and cheated by a wicked man. But what were these hopes in which he was disappointed? What were these wishes in which he was frustrated? What was that faith that was abused? They were surely among the most noble and benevolent instincts of the human heart – the love of peace, the toil for peace, the strife for peace, the pursuit of peace, even at great peril, and certainly to the utter disdain of popularity or clamour. Whatever else history may or may not say about these terrible, tremendous years, we can be sure that Neville Chamberlain acted with most perfect sincerity according to his lights and strove to the utmost of his capacity and authority, which were powerful, to save the world from the awful devastating struggle in which we are now engaged…

Herr Hitler protests with frantic words and gestures that he has only desired peace. What do these ravings and outpouring count before the silence of Neville Chamberlain’s tomb?

What am I doing here

I can’t say that I have grand ambitions on this blog. But I do have some things that I want to focus on. I think you can expect this blog to have three main categories:

  • General interest. These will be things that I find interesting and want to share. This will be news stories, political comments, interesting bits of software, books, and whatever comes out of the grab-bag that is my interests.
  • Business and entrepreneurship: one of my ongoing interests these days is entrepreneurship. How does one establish and build a business? How are new businesses funded? What strange business ideas do I have today? You’ll see some of this.
  • Happiness projects: I endeavor to be happy. In recent years, I have begun to realize that my own happiness is of paramount importance to me (surprise!). I have found that issues in this area extend to diet, exercise, spirituality, supplement intake, how I think about and approach life in general, and basically every day-to-day experience that I can think of.

I am sure that as time goes on this might change, but for now, expect me to focus on these areas.

yeah, I saw Gattica too.

It’s official.  You can now have your genes screened for any known genetic variations related to disease.

This includes heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and multiple cancers.   This service is offered by 23andMe and will cost only $999 for the home based kit.   In addition to the medical info, you get complete access to your genome and info on people you are or might be related to.

This could be the ultimate social network.

In other news, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) is stalling passage of an anti genetic-discrimination bill.

I got promoted yesterday.

I am now a supervisor, a position that places me squarely between the normal, street level paramedics and the upper management of our organization.  It also marks my first real foray into middle management.

I have a lot to learn about the whole management/leadership role, but I am excited at the challenge and the opportunity.  Check back for for future mistakes and successes

Well.

Here it is.

My first post on my new personal weblog. If you are reading this, you must know me.

This blog will be home to my random musings, things I find interesting both from the internet(s) and real life, and to whatever else.

I hope you come to enjoy it.

My goal is to post at a minimum once a week. So don’t complain if that’s all you get.

See you soon.
